Hypothermia Day!

Today we drove up to the Sandia (Watermelon) Ski Mountain, learned a bit about hypothermia, then some of us (yes, we volunteered) changed into bathing suits and got buried in snow to experience hypothermia firsthand. I was unlucky enough to be immersed in a hot tub before being covered with snow, which greatly lowered my snow tolerance given the high wind chill.

After a nice rewarming, a hot cocoa, and a debriefing, we split to go downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, or snow shoeing. Unfortunately, due to high winds, we only got a few rides in before they had to close the mountain down!

Hi Ryan - Of course you had to volunteer! Just the picture I wanted to see - my sun buried in the snow! Anyway - at least you got to ski a bit. PLease don't volunteer to lose your legs or get a snake bite. I am determined to be at your graduation. How many people are in your program ? Are the all 3rd or 4th years? Love mom

Oh, great Ryan! So nice to see you "swimming" in the snow. What are you "touched" in the head or something? The goal is to learn, not sacrifice yourself to science!

Glad someone had the sense to shut down the mountain before someone got blown off it.

Have fun, learn a lot, but come home safely in one piece.

I'll talk with you soon.

Love,

Dad

There are 19 people in our group. About 15 are 4th year med students. The other 4 or 5 are orthopedic surgery interns.
